Main refinancing operation
The main refinancing operation is the European Central Bank’s (ECB) key monetary policy instrument. These operations have a fixed maturity and are used to provide commercial banks with liquidity. The interest rates banks pay on these funds are determined in accordance with the key interest rate regularly set by the ECB. The ECB uses main refinancing operations to influence the amount of liquidity in the banking system and, consequently, the overall economic climate.
