Share

A share is a security that represents a unit of ownership in a stock corporation, which is a type of company. When you buy a share, you become a shareholder. As a result, you get certain financial and, in some instances, voting rights. Shareholders hope to earn an income on their investment by receiving a part of the company’s profit (dividends) and see the value (that is, the price) of their shares rise. Companies issue shares to raise equity.
