Making use of financial services

As we retire, the smart use of financial services plays an important role in ensuring our financial security. Digital financial services, for example, have many benefits, such as convenient account access, fast transactions and the option to manage finances from home.

Despite their advantages, digital financial services sometimes also imply hurdles and risks, especially for older people. Some people may simply be technically overwhelmed and need IT support; others may be at risk of becoming a target of financial fraud (often older people get targeted). Therefore it is crucial to stay informed about current financial services and their responsible use and to know where to get support. It is important for all of us to implement security measures, such as strong passwords. But we also need to regularly check transactions on our accounts and stay suspicious if we receive unexpected requests by email, phone or through other channels. It is a good idea to only use trustworthy financial institutions and reputable online platforms. The more we know about handling financial matters safely, the easier it will be to retire with financial security and confidence. To keep on top of things, for example with regard to digital skills, retirement may also be a good opportunity to consider further training, which is offered by various public bodies.
